It'll take an hour or two to get used to, but before you know it you'll be shuffling through the game's menus in-between eye blinks.ДЄdding to the depth are numerous puzzles, side-quests, and mini-games for you to play. BioWare did a fantastic job making the menus easy to toggle through. Controlling character movement isn't very demanding, but there are plenty of menus that you'll need to navigate. I was very impressed with how well the game controls. Though it looks like it's all about brawn, you'll definitely need to use your noggin to attain victory. The battles require you to plan your attack, switch between your characters (you control up to three at a time), and utilize your party members' unique abilities. While the sequences appear action-heavy, especially those glorious Jedi lightsaber duels, what's really happening is that two tiny gnomes in your Xbox are rolling dice to see if you commands take.

The combat takes place in real-time, but you can pause whenever you feel the need to plot out your moves (just like in Baldur's Gate). During combat you select from a list of available commands and a video-game implementation of Wizards of the Coast d20 Star Wars game (very similar to Dungeons & Dragons) takes over. Though the combat sequences look like those found in a third-person action game, underneath the surface it's all RPG.

The former is self explanatory, while the latter isn't quite what it seems. The bulk of the game is a combination of exploration and combat. Thankfully, the gameplay is also excellent. Of course, you're not buying a game to simply watch a story unfold or listen to characters talk to each other. Each has an extensive dialogue tree that makes the characters seem like true companions rather than tacked-on grunts. You'll meet nine characters that will join your party as your adventure progresses. Even more impressive than the story is how well the characters are written. The overall plot is fantastic and definitely better than the drivel found in Episodes I and II. putting the fate of the universe in the hands of a scrub like me.' But after the major plot twist is delightfully revealed, things make much more sense, and the adventure becomes that much bigger. I thought, 'No wonder you Jedi idiots died out. Initially, I was wondering why my character was given the task of saving the galaxy. What makes the quest so appealing is the fantastic story and character writing. After getting over the initial hump, you'll find yourself on a star-spanning adventure sending you to places like Dantooine, Kashyyyk, Tatooine, and Manaan. The story starts rather slowly, but once you get off Taris things really pick up. As more events unfold, you find yourself on a quest to track down five 'Star Maps' that will lead you to Sith's leader, Darth Malak. From there you must rescue a Jedi named Bastila, who possesses a rare ability that could help spell the end of the Sith. Under attack from the Sith, you make a hasty escape to a planet called Taris. In the beginning it seems like you're merely a highly skilled newcomer to the republic, but your significance to the current state of affairs is revealed to be so much more. The game lets you play the part of a character that ultimately decides the fate of the universe. KoTOR is a magnificent mlange of story, gameplay, and acting that takes many fascinating elements of the Star Wars universe and combines them with BioWare's penchant for first-rate interactive storytelling. It also stars the most adorable Twi'lek I've ever laid eyes on. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic ( KoTOR) is clearly the best RPG for Xbox, certainly one of the best games released in 2003, and definitely one of the best Star Wars games LucasArts has ever released. Renowned RPG developer BioWare has delivered a title that will satisfy all three. And a deviant subsection of the two groups has been aching for a game that features a nubile Twi'lek teen. Star Wars fans have been dying for a brilliant Star Wars game.
